Can you live a life without regrets?
“There is no such thing as a life without any regrets. Regret is both a feeling and a pattern of thinking where one dwells or constantly replays and thinks about an event, reactions, or other actions could have be taken. Regrets can become painful burdens that interfere with your present happiness, cause you grief, restrict your future and keep you from moving forward. If you find yourself overcome by regrets, identify your feelings of regret, learn to forgive yourself, and move on. If you find this difficult, it is ok to get help and counselling to help you move on and live the happy life you deserve!” http://www.wikihow.com/Overcome-Serious-Regrets
When regrets disturb your sleep
I could not sleep last night, as somehow I kept replaying some things which have happened in the past, and wish they hadn’t. No matter how much I tried to sleep I kept having flashbacks!
I think what triggered this, was because I had spend some time speaking to a lady aged 66 who lives all on her own now with every material possession she ever needed, but with no one to share it with. She had spent most of her life working as a top successful executive and had not spent time developing relationships with family and friends. She said at her age she did not have the confidence to start new friendships. I suggested a few groups she could look at joining just to start making new friends based on something she enjoyed. I also suggested that though she had distance herself from family members, she still had time to make amends and try to slowly build the relationships!
Tips to cope with regrets http://www.wikihow.com/Overcome-Serious-Regrets
- You can not change what happened in the past, but you can choose how your past affects your present and future.
- Remember that sometimes you are actually harsher with yourself.
- Visualize yourself acting and doing things as you move forward and leave your regrets behind.
- Seek out support groups or a counsellor in order to discover how you can get relief from regret.
- Help needy people as a volunteer or support a charity so that you can stand back from your own life for a while.
- Write down how you feel about the person you hate and crumble the paper and throw it harshly.
- Remember everyone makes mistakes, you are not the only one.
Practice daily affirmations.
An affirmation is a positive statement to encourage, uplift you, and make you more compassionate towards yourself. Having compassion for yourself makes it easier to empathize and forgive your past-self, which can reduce feelings of regret. Tell yourself, write, or think the affirmations.
