Kukuwa®African Dance and Laughter Yoga for #Wellbeing

I decided to combine African Dance and Laughter Yoga as these are two things I do to make me feel good. Over the last year, I have ran many sessions and the feedback has always been positive, leaving those attending feeling very happy and ready to make the most of their day. I am both a qualified laughter yoga leader and an African dance workout instructor. I bring to the sessions my bubbly personality and my mission to spread happiness and good vibes. I am also the UK Laughter Champion 2022.

Kukuwa®African Dance for Wellbeing

Kukuwa® African Dance for wellbeing

There has been lots of research dating back to the 1980s which has shown that dancing regularly can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. It is an instant mood-booster as we dance to the beat of music from various parts of Africa and get our happy juices flowing. You don’t even need to know the moves just feel the beat and dance with other like minded people.

Our Kukuwa® African Dance Workout sessions are suitable to all ages and levels of fitness. The same classes are suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels of fitness. All the dance routines are such that one can choose to either walk through the whole dance class or keep up with the normal pace of the class. All dance movements are low impact, and both seniors and children can participate. Pregnant women can also take Kukuwa® Dance Workout from the start of their pregnancy to full term, depending, of course, on the approval from their doctors.

5 Tips to cope with negative people in your life

There are people in our lives who we love, but at times their constant negativity can cause us unnecessary stress and anxiety which is not good for our overall wellbeing and happiness.

Here are some of my tips on how to try to deal with this. Please feel free to share yours too.

  1. Accept that they are negative and that you cannot change their negativity, but can change the way you respond to them.
  2. The way people act has nothing to do with you.
  3. Limit the time you spend with them.
  4. Counteract their negativity with positivity.
  5. Before you go to visit a negative person set your intention to be positive and send positive emery to them before you meet them.

Being a Laughter Champion

One of the funniest things I have done this year happened on Sunday 24th April when I took part in the UK Laughter Championships. Their was a time in my life where for 5 years, I lost my joy and sense of happiness because of personal challenges I was going through. At times I felt like a bird trapped in a cage of low self esteem, sadness and depression. I am happy with the help and support of so many people and organisations I was able to set back and now use my experiences to help others.

I entered the competition as it is part of my mission of spreading good vibes and positivity around especially during these times with so much uncertainty, anxiety, stress and negativity around.

The first stage of the competition was to send my laugh for consideration. I was then excited to make it to the finals.

Below in the image of what we had to do.

The most challenging one for me was doing the silent laughter, as you were not allowed to make any sound. The minute I had to do this was so long, and at the end I just had to let the laugh out.

The other competitors were amazing and had very good laughs. I was surprised and excited and felt honoured that the judges selected me as the winning laugher. Now I look forward to representing UK in the world championships on 15 May 2022 via zoom.

Learn to relax and let it go.

One of the hardest things is learning to let go of a situation that is causing you stress but is beyond your control to change or do anything about.

For peace of mind, you have to learn to let go and accept it for what it is, though to start with it can be painful.

.
I had a situation where I wanted certain people to just forgive each other and get on, but no matter what I said, it was like hitting a brick wall. This was hurting me as I love the two of them and found myself in the middle of things. After months of stress and trying to figure out a solution, I got fed up and decided to just get on with both on different levels and leave it up to them whether they wanted to get on or not. I feel so relieved and now have one less thing to stress about.

Here are some tips to help you too to learn to let go.

  1. Accept that there is nothing else you can do to change the situation.
  2. Express the pain and hurt you are feeling.
  3. Determine and decide to let it go.
  4. Trust that you will be ok as you adapt to things.
  5. Learn the lesson and move on.
  6. Visualise your self letting go and enjoy the feeling of freedom.
  7. Pray for divine intervention.
  8. Remember that health is wealth and don’t let things you cannot change steal your joy and happiness.

Maintain an attitude of gratitude to relieve stress

Are you feeling a bit stressed? One of the things I have learnt to do is to maintain an attitude of gratitude and to record on a regularly basis the things that I am grateful for in life.

Taking the time to feel gratitude can help improve our emotional well-being by helping us cope with stress. Early research suggests that a daily practice of gratitude could affect the body, too. For example, one study found that gratitude was linked to fewer signs of heart disease.

The other day I was so stressed as I was stuck in a traffic jam and had very important meeting to attend to. After a few minutes of being annoyed and realising the traffic was not going to be moving for a while because of an accident; I decided to phone the client to explain I was going to be late, she was so understanding and suggested we schedule.

I felt such a relief and thanked her. Sitting in my car, I started to just recall people and experiences in my life that I was grateful for. This made me take off my mind from the stress, and then I put on my music and started to sing and dance. Looking besides me I could see the next driver smiling at me and shaking his head LOL.

Coping with long term stress

We all experience temporary feelings of stress as  part of our daily life; but when  these feelings become long-lasting or chronic, they can have a severe impact on our health and wellbeing

Long term or Chronic stress can seem overwhelming, and at times you may feel unable to regain control over your life, hence it is important you don’t suffer in silence but seek professional medical guidance, advice and support from your doctor who could also refer you to specialist.

Some self-help techniques you can try includes include;-

Try meditation to help reduce stress

I must say initially, I was a bit uncomfortable with mediation, as I thought its was just weird. As I started to do some research, I was amazed at the different forms of meditation. I tried a couple before selecting a few techniques which I use.

I must say, now find meditation helps me to cast aside my stress and worries as I get into a deep state of relaxation which helps my mind to be calm and help to reduce stress. There are different forms of meditation which you can try. Just google simple meditation and then browse trough and try a few so you can find the one which suits you.

Meditation has been scientifically proven to help alleviate stress after just eight weeks of regular practice. Try this 10 minutes relation from headspace https://www.headspace.com/meditation/10-minute-meditation

Meditation can be used as a quick-fix stress reliever to help you reverse your body’s stress response and get you into a relaxed sate. If you are new to the idea of meditation keep practising and you will for sure enjoy the benefits as I am.

Do share you experiences here with me. Rember, keep clam and don’t let stress steal you joy and happiness.

Set clear boundaries to help reduce stress

One of the main cause of my stress and anxiety in the past has been in setting clear boundaries and sticking to them, and even now I do find myself in situations when I say a bad YES to things I should have said a good NO to. I am getting their and continue to improve in this area of my life.

When we set out what we are comfortable with and what we are not, we protect ourselves from relationships that may cross certain boundaries; and we can be confident with what we can and will not allow into our life. This in turn can naturally help lower our stress level which is so important for our overall wellbeing and happiness.
.
4 tips to setting clear boundaries

  1. Be clear on what you will and will not tolerate
  2. Learn to say no without feeling guilty
  3. Know how far you can support someone to solve their problems without it causing you stress.
  4. Take time to pause and think before you commit to making key decisions.

Setting boundaries especially if you have not done takes time, but with practise it becomes easier and you will feel much better in your self. Do share with me any tips you may have in setting boundaries or if you need further help with this, do message me.

Using mantras to help reduce stress

Stress is part of life and though we cannot avoid them, we can have a set of techniques we can use. One way to reduce stress is the use of mantras to help ease some of the tension and quiet the mind..
As we can use exercise to train our bodies, meditation and mantras can be used to train our minds .and help reduce stress. I have a number of mantras I use on a regular basis which help me especially moments when I feel stressed or overwhelmed. I also record them so I can listen to them.

According to Dr. Herbert Benson, president and founder of the Mind/Body Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School, those who chanted mantras experienced psychological changes. These changes ranged from reduced heart rate, lower stress levels, and slower metabolism. Benson also documented that repeating mantras can benefit the immune system and relieve insomnia, leading to reduced doctor visit.

Mantras can help us reduce stress by repeating them and by combining them with sound, breathing, and rhythm. This then evokes a relaxing quality and allows for your mind to stop wandering and for you to just be still.

Write down some mantras put them everywhere. At the office, at your desk, at home. Put it anywhere so you can glance over at it when you get overwhelmed. You could also record and listen to them when needed.

Thanks very much for taking time to read this, and I hope you found it useful,
